Council Corner

Hello, fellow “All-America” Goodyearians! What an exciting
time to live in Goodyear. Look what’s coming–employment, shopping, another
hospital, baseball and recreation. All these new businesses will be supported
by the Southwest Valley Chamber of Commerce, which I want to congratulate on
its 50th anniversary.
As a business owner in our town, it has been a pleasure to
work with, learn, network, and grow with the Chamber. One of its favorite
mottos is “Shop Locally.” During this economic pinch, you should know
that for every dollar spent in Goodyear, the majority of it will be
reinvested in some way back into our local economy. In addition, 40
percent of the basic services provided by our city come from the sales
tax spent in our town. So, spend your dollars in Goodyear. The sales
tax is the “life blood” of our city.

To help Goodyear businesses, I made the suggestion to our
Police Department for some sort of “pro-active” business collaboration. They
came up with a “Protect Your Business Program,” which will be easily accessible
from the City’s website in mid-July.
I may be a Councilmember and a business owner, but first I
am a wife and mother. I have asked our City staff to look into creating a “city
platform” to strengthen families and youth. The backbone of any great city is
its people. As we grow, we need to lay the foundation for services important to
our future.
Lastly, being an Arizona native, I have some tips on how to
get through the hot summers with bored kids. Try the Palm Valley Cinema’s free,
kid-friendly movies three days a week. Or how about bowling, vacation bible
schools, or Goodyear’s summer recreation programs? Help kids establish a
reading schedule. Check out Goodyear’s new library services. Let teens take
pride in designing and painting their own room. They might even clean it in the
process!
Don’t miss Goodyear’s All-America Star Spangled 4th of July.
Our citizens deserve one big congratulatory celebration. Our whole community is
on the Goodyear Team. I’m sure proud to be on it.
Stay cool, be safe and be blessed.
